Oyster Project

Oyster Project
The Moorings Yacht & Country Club, ORCA and St. Edward’s School have teamed up to help save the Indian River Lagoon through The Oyster Project. In the fall, Oyster baskets will be deployed off docks around The Moorings property, St. Edward’s and residences within The Moorings Community.

Oysters are not only a tasty appetizer, they are also a keystone species. Oysters clean the water and filter out the algae and sediment; stabilize shorelines providing protection from waves and storms; and provide critical habitat for fish and other marine life. The benefits of oysters in the Indian River Lagoon have led a group of volunteers to attack the issue head on in an attempt to restore the oyster population and improve water quality. Adult oysters will be raised in the basket cages, situated at the waterline in key locations on docks in and around The Moorings. The adult oysters will filter as much as 50 gallons of water a day, leading to improved water quality. Water testing will be done before during and after the project to gauge success.

For more information on how to get involved, please call The Moorings at 231-1004.
